The typical yellowish to slightly orange coloured powder is derived from the plant's thick root. In Ayurvedic medicine, the turmeric powder strong beneficial effects are attributed to - it is rich in potassium, vitamin C and also curcumin.
 
Besides using the spice for cooking, turmeric is an important plant colorant, used for coloring materials (leather, wool and silk) and as food coloring.
The colouring effect of turmeric is also used for decorative cosmetics hair dyes. Hair is given a very intense but very cool yellow shade. Therefore, it is recommended to mix turmeric with other plant powders such as henna, rhubarb or a more neutral senna, in order to create shades ranging from golden yellow to cool blonde.
